Two Arkansas Organizations Receive Health Center Planning Grants

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced awards totaling $10 million to aid 129 organizations across the country that would like to become community health centers.  These funds, made available by the Affordable Care Act, support organizations’ development as a future health center.

A Culture Inspired: CHCA 2010 Annual Conference in Review

U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln stated, “Community Health Centers are a critical component of what is right and good about health care reform,” during her address to CHCA Annual Conference attendees. Craig Kennedy, Associate VP of Federal and State Affairs for NACHC, expressed his feelings that Community Health Centers are not simply the best model of care for the poor and uninsured, but are the best model of care for all primary health care. These sentiments pervaded this year’s conference. The conference theme, “Inspiring a Culture of Excellence: Innovation, Leadership, Quality,” aimed to prepare the Arkansas CHC staff members, board members, and partners in attendance for the landscape change of health care reform implementation. Over 200 attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors participated in this year’s conference.

Mainline Health Systems, Inc. Welcomes Dr. Debra Cole

Mainline Health System's Portland health center has welcomed a new doctor to its team who utilizes her medical practice to fund her work as a missionary doctor in poverty stricken countries. Dr. Debra Cole, an Arkansas native, joined Mainline in April on a contract basis, but accepted the position full time when presented the opportunity to continue as a missionary doctor seven weeks per year.

Corning Area Healthcare, Inc. Receives Three Quality Achievement Awards at Recent AFMC Quality Conference

Corning Area Healthcare receives three AFMC Quality Achievement AwardsFamily Medical Center in Corning, Community Healthcare Center in Walnut Ridge, and the Pocahontas Family Medical Center received Quality Achievement Awards during the recent Quality Conference hosted by the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care on May 20-21. All three were awarded for their use of the Patient Electronic Care System (PECS) which resulted in improved processes for clinic staff and providers and improved delivery of care for patients.

The Pocahontas Family Medical Center used PECS data to identify quality improvement needs. They used the information gained to raise awareness of clinic staff in the importance of timely and accurate completion of PECS data sheets, which resulted in improved delivery of care and patient outcomes.

New England Journal of Medicine article highlights Community Health Centers' role in Health Care Reform

The New England Journal of Medicine recently published an article highlighting the growing importance of Community Health Centers (CHCs) to our nation's health care delivery system in light of Health Care Reform. According to the article, funding provided to CHCs through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will enable CHCs to care for nearly 20 million of the 32 million Americans who will gain health insurance. That is in addition to the 20 million Americans currently cared for among the more than 8000 CHC locations in the United States. The article highlights the commitment of CHCs to serving America's medically underserved populations as well as their demonstrated ability to deliver affordable, comprehensive, coordinated, patient-centered care in facilities physically proximate to the patients who need it.

White River Rural Health Center holds groundbreaking ceremony

White River Rural Health Center recently held an official groundbreaking ceremony at the construction site of the new Health Center in Jonesboro. The new center's staff will include two physicians, three registered nurse practitioners, and other staff. "This will be a full-service clinic that will see patients regardless of their ability to pay," Dr. Collier said. The new center will be the second in the city of Jonesboro.
